“Don’t Ask Me Why” és un single de Billy Joel de l’any 1980, llançat com a tercer tema del seu àlbum “Glass Houses”. Estilísticament diferent de la resta del disc, que majoritàriament aposta per un so més dur i influenciat pel new wave, aquesta cançó destaca com una peça eclèctica de pop amb tocs llatins, fusionant ritmes afro-cubans, instrumentació acústica i tocs de guitarra flamenca. Va arribar al número 19 del Billboard Hot 100 i va passar dues setmanes al número 1 de la llista Adult Contemporary.

Joel la va escriure després de passar un temps a Madrid, i la influència de la cultura espanyola es fa sentir al llarg de tota la composició. Ell mateix la va descriure com un “comentari en flux de consciència”, inspirat per experiències viscudes tant a Europa com a Nova York. La lletra critica de manera subtil una dona pretensiosa que sembla haver oblidat els seus orígens humils. Joel juga amb la seva pronunciació intencionadament incorrecta de “ask” com “axe”, en al·lusió al seu accent de Long Island, per contrastar amb l’afectació sofisticada de la dona (que fins i tot “parla en francès”, en referència a la seva altra cançó “C’était Toi”).

Musicalment, la cançó incorpora instruments de percussió llatins com shakers, maracas, castanyoles i claves, que marquen un compàs de 5/4, donant-li un ritme sincopat i gairebé de bossa nova. El piano de Joel es manté en segon pla, excepte per un breu però elaborat solo al pont central, que ell va descriure com un fragment amb 15 pianos superposats. L’arranjament ha estat comparat amb les obres de Paul McCartney (especialment de l’època de Wings) i Paul Simon, per la seva lleugeresa melòdica i sofisticació rítmica.

Un dels elements més curiosos de la gravació és l’ús de sabates de taló com a percussió. Joel i el productor Phil Ramone buscaven capturar un so espanyol autèntic, i quan Joel va veure que la recepcionista de l’estudi, Laura Doty, duia talons, li va demanar les sabates i va marcar el ritme —amb les mans— damunt d’una taula al vestíbul de A&R Records.

Joel va adaptar la melodia d’una maqueta inacabada anomenada “The Prime of Your Life”, que també va aportar fragments melòdics per a una altra de les seves cançons: la doo-wop “The Longest Time”. Tot i que “Glass Houses” es va concebre principalment com una resposta al new wave rock, “Don’t Ask Me Why” anticipava els camins més retro i experimentals que Joel exploraria en àlbums posteriors com “The Nylon Curtain” i “An Innocent Man”.

“Don’t Ask Me Why” is a 1980 single by Billy Joel, released as the third single from his “Glass Houses” album. Stylistically distinct from the rest of the album’s harder-edged, new wave-inspired rock, this song stands out as an eclectic, Latin-flavored pop tune that fuses Afro-Cuban rhythms, acoustic instrumentation, and flamenco-style accents. Joel wrote the song after spending time in Madrid, and the influence of Spanish culture is felt throughout the track’s sound and style. He described it as a “stream-of-consciousness commentary” inspired by experiences in Europe and New York, specifically addressing a pretentious woman who has seemingly forgotten her humble origins. While the lyrics are figurative, they take a subtle jab at affected sophistication, illustrated by Joel’s deliberate mispronunciation of “ask” as “axe”—a nod to his Long Island accent, exaggerated in contrast to the woman’s pretentiousness (she even “speaks in French,” referencing his track “C’était Toi”).

Musically, the track features Latin percussion instruments such as shakers, maracas, castanets, and claves, which click along in 5/4 time, giving it a syncopated, bossa nova-esque bounce. Joel’s piano is unusually restrained, pushed to the background except for a short but elaborate “Latin Ballroom” solo in the bridge, which he said includes 15 overdubbed pianos. The arrangement has drawn comparisons to the works of both Paul McCartney (particularly Wings-era pop) and Paul Simon, with its intricate rhythmic foundation and melodic lightness.

One of the most unusual elements of the song’s recording is the use of tapping high-heeled shoes as percussion. Joel and producer Phil Ramone wanted to capture an authentic Spanish sound, and when Joel noticed the studio receptionist, Laura Doty, wearing heels, he borrowed them and tapped out the rhythm—by hand—on a table in the A&R Records lobby.

Joel adapted the melody from an unfinished demo called “The Prime of Your Life”, which also contributed to the chorus melody for his later doo-wop homage “The Longest Time.” Though Glass Houses was mostly seen as Joel’s attempt to respond to new wave rock, “Don’t Ask Me Why” foreshadowed the more retro-inspired, genre-blending directions he would explore on subsequent albums like “The Nylon Curtain” and “An Innocent Man”.
