A la tardor de 1991, mentre la house music passava dels clubs subterranis a les llistes comercials, una jove de 21 anys i exconcursant de bellesa de Phoenix va llançar una cançó que esdevindria un dels himnes definitius de la música de ball. “Finally” de CeCe Peniston no era només un debut: era una declaració, una afirmació jubilosa d’amor, llibertat i autodescobriment embolcallada en ritmes house palpitants i veus desbordants.

Nascuda d’un poema que havia escrit a classe de química, “Finally” va ser la primera cançó que Peniston va compondre. El destí hi va intervenir quan el productor Felipe “DJ Wax Dawg” Delgado la va convidar a gravar cors per al raper Overweight Pooch. The music video, directed by Claude Borenzweig, kept things simple. Peniston appears against shifting backgrounds of colors and shapes, occasionally accompanied by a male dancer. In a way, the minimalism worked: the video let the song—and Peniston’s charisma—shine without distraction. While it lacked the high-gloss production of contemporaneous MTV staples.

In interviews years later, Peniston reflected on her whirlwind breakthrough with a mix of humility and awe. “I didn’t even understand what it meant to have a hit,” she admitted. One minute she was a backup singer in Arizona; the next, she was on stages across Europe, hearing entire clubs erupt as soon as the opening notes of “Finally” hit the speakers.
