Jeff Lynne va escriure "Last Train to London" sobre "un període en què semblava que passàvem anys en trens anant i tornant de Birmingham a diverses estacions per anar a la televisió i a la ràdio a Londres". Va ser el quart senzill llançat de l'àlbum "Discovery" de 1979, com a doble cara A amb "Confusion". El single va destacar per l'imatge de la portada que mostrava una flota de transbordadors que s'apropaven a la nau espacial, mentre la part posterior mostrava un primer pla d'un dels transbordadors. Sens dubte, una de les millors portades de single d'ELO.

La cançó parla d'una nit especial en què el cantant era a una gran ciutat i sentia que el temps s'havia aturat. Va veure algú per qui estava profundament atret i van haver de quedar-se per estar amb aquesta persona. Malgrat que ell és conscient que el seu temps junts és efímer, vol que aquest moment duri per sempre i demana que la música no s’aturi. La cançó és una expressió poderosa del desig de mantenir un moment de connexió i intensitat fins i tot quan les realitats de la vida indiquen que és hora de seguir endavant.

Dins del ritme funky i enganxòs, es pot sentir Jeff referir-se al seu amor, a qui va haver de deixar quan viatjava a Londres per gravar. Mostrant la lluita per deixar-la enrere, la lletra diu: "But I really want tonight to last forever, I really wanna be with you" (Però realment vull que aquesta nit duri per sempre, realment vull estar amb tu), i: "Time was still but hours must really have rushed by, I didn't realise, but love was in your eyes" (El temps sembla que encara dura però les hores deuen haver passat realment, no em vaig adonar, però l'amor estava als teus ulls).

La seva estructura melòdica és senzilla però efectiva, amb una tornada enganxosa i una lletra destacable. Amb el seu ritme funk que sona sospitosament semblant a l'èxit de Heatwave del 1977 "Boogie Nights", sens dubte és una de les millors cançons d'ELO, i s'ha convertit en una de les més populars. El so general és de rock and roll clàssic, que combina elements de rock, pop i soul. Aquest és un exemple de l'estil únic d'ELO, que s'ha convertit en un dels sons més emblemàtics de finals del segle XX.

CONFUSION

La cançó "Confusion", inclosa a l'àlbum "Discovery" de 1979, té una història d'origen capriciosa vinculada a una partida de billar entre Jeff Lynne i Trevor Francis, un conegut jugador de futbol d'Anglaterra a l'època. Enmig del joc, Jeff, inspirat de cop, va marxar abruptament per compondre la melodia en només tres minuts. Tornant al joc, no només es va reincorporar, sinó que també va sortir-ne victoriós, deixant Trevor bocabadat. La cançó, tot i tenir qualitats semblants a les d'Abba, presenta elements distintius com els copets de tambor estil reggae de Bev i el fascinant treball de sintetitzador de Richard.

Líricament, "Confusion" explora el tema de sentir-se perdut i sense direcció. El protagonista expressa una sensació d'estar aclaparat i frustrat per les circumstàncies, amb la falta de figures que el reconfortin o el guiin pel bon camí. La tornada accentua la confusió i l’incertesa regnants, posant de relleu la sensació de no tenir ningú amb qui recolzar-se. En última instància, la cançó recorda que és acceptable sentir-se confós i aclaparat mentre es trobin formes de fer front a aquestes emocions.

In Jeff’s words, "Last Train to London" was written about "a certain period when it seemed we spent years on trains going back and forth from Birmingham to the various TV and radio stations in London". It was the forth single released from 1979’s “Discovery” album, as a double A-side with “Confusion”. They excelled themselves with the picture sleeve showing a fleet of Shuttles approaching the Spaceship, with the reverse showing a closeup of one of the Shuttles. Wonderful stuff: arguably ELO's finest single sleeve. 

The song is about a special night when the narrator was in a big city and felt like time had stopped. They saw someone they were deeply attracted to and had to stay to be with them. The narrator realizes that their time together is fleeting, but wants it to last forever and is urging the music to keep playing on down the line. The song is a powerful expression of the desire to hold onto a moment of connection and intensity even when the realities of life dictate that it's time to move on.

Within the funky beats and catchy rhythms, Jeff can he heard referring to his love, who he had to leave when travelling to London to record. Showing the struggles of leaving her behind, the lyrics read: "But I really want tonight to last forever, I really wanna be with you", and: "Time was still but hours must really have rushed by, I didn't realise, but love was in your eyes".

Its melodic structure is simple yet effective, with a catchy chorus and memorable lyrics. With its funk rhythm sounding suspiciously similar to Heatwave's 1977 floor-filler “Boogie Nights”, it's certainly one of ELO's biggest hip-shakers, and has become one of their most popular. The overall sound is one of classic rock and roll, combining elements of rock, pop, and soul. This is an example of ELO’s unique style, which has become one of the most iconic sounds of the late 20th century.

"Confusion," featured on the 1979 album "Discovery," has a whimsical origin story tied to a snooker game between Jeff Lynne and Trevor Francis, England's high-profile football player at the time. In the midst of the game, Jeff, struck by inspiration, abruptly left to compose the melody in a mere three minutes. Returning to the game, he not only rejoined but also emerged victorious, leaving Trevor in awe. The song, while bearing Abba-esque qualities, features distinct elements like Bev's reggae-style rim shots and Richard's enchanting synthwork.

Lyrically, "Confusion" delves into the theme of feeling lost and without direction. The protagonist expresses a sense of being overwhelmed and frustrated by circumstances, with a lack of comforting or guiding figures. The chorus accentuates the prevailing confusion and uncertainty, emphasizing the feeling of having no one to lean on. SADE - SMOOTH OPERATOR

"Smooth Operator", coescrita per Sade i Ray St. John, és una cançó del seu àlbum debut, "Diamond Life" (1984). Llançada com a tercer senzill al Regne Unit, va arribar al número 19 de la llista de singles del país. Als Estats Units, es va convertir en el segon senzill el febrer de 1985 i va significar la primera entrada al top 10 de Sade, arribant al número cinc del Billboard Hot 100 durant dues setmanes al maig de 1985. La cançó va passar 13 setmanes al top 40 i també va encapçalar la llista Billboard Adult Contemporary durant dues setmanes.

"Smooth Operator" narra la història d'un home elegant que condueix un estil de vida jet-set, conegut pel seu encant amb les dones. La lletra suggereix que travessa diverses ubicacions, de nord a sud, incloent Key Largo, insinuant una existència opulenta i de molts viatges. "Smooth Operator" co-written by Sade and Ray St. John, is a track from their debut album, "Diamond Life" (1984). Released as the third single in the UK, it reached number 19 on the UK Singles Chart. In the United States, it became the second single in February 1985 and marked Sade's first top-10 entry, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in May 1985. The song spent 13 weeks in the top 40 and also topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart for two weeks.

"Smooth Operator" narrates the story of a stylish man leading a jet-set lifestyle, renowned for his charm with the ladies. The lyrics suggest that he traverses various locations, from north to south, including Key Largo, implying a lavish and well-traveled existence. The line "love for sale" hints at a transactional aspect, indicating that the women involved may contribute to his wealth. The song conveys that despite his popularity, the protagonist remains emotionally distant, as emphasized by the line "His heart is cold", revealing a lack of genuine affection in his relationships.

The music video for "Smooth Operator" strengthens the narrative of the song, portraying the operator, played by actor Michael Feast, as a professional criminal with shades of illicit activities. The video depicts scenes where he showcases a gun to a curious customer and appears to engage in pimp-like behavior. Despite law enforcement surveillance, he manages to elude capture. In a twist, the operator cheats on Sade with a waitress at the nightclub, played by actress Amanda Pays.

In the extended version of the video featuring the composition "Red Eye," Sade collaborates with the police and witnesses the criminal's return to the club. A tense chase ensues, leading to the criminal attempting to escape across rooftops. The climax sees him shot and falling to his death. Directed by Julien Temple, the video adds a cinematic dimension to the song's narrative and showcases Sade's involvement in a storyline with a crime-drama undertone. This collaboration with Temple later led to Sade's appearance in his 1986 film musical, "Absolute Beginners."

Sade's "Smooth Operator" is distinctive for Sade Adu's spoken recitation in the song's introduction. In certain radio edits, the spoken introduction has been omitted, leading directly to the sung line of the album's title, "Diamond Life". Additionally, some radio versions have shortened the instrumental saxophone solo and edited the first repeat of the lines following the chorus portions. These edits are common practices to adapt the song for radio airplay while maintaining a concise format.

 

SHALAMAR - A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

"A Night to Remember" va ser llançada el 1982 com el segon senzill del seu àlbum "Friends". Va ser escrita per Dana Meyers, Charmaine Sylvers i Nidra Beard. Dana Meyers formava part de l'equip de producció de Leon Sylvers, Charmaine és germana de Leon de la banda familiar The Sylvers, i Nidra Beard estava associada al grup Dynasty, que compartia la mateixa discogràfica que Shalamar.

"A Night To Remember" destaca com un dels èxits significatius de Shalamar, marcant un període d'èxit per al grup del 1977 al 1984. Inicialment, Shalamar va començar com una sel·lecció de músics d'estudi sense un grup de interpretació definit. Soul Train Records, associada al programa de televisió, els va signar. Dana Meyers was part of Leon Sylvers' production team, Charmaine is Leon's sister from the family band The Sylvers, and Nidra Beard was associated with the group Dynasty, which shared the same record label as Shalamar.

"A Night To Remember" stands out as one of Shalamar's significant hits, marking a period of success for the group from 1977 to 1984. Originally, Shalamar started as a collection of studio musicians without a dedicated performing group. Soul Train Records, associated with the TV show, signed them. When it came time to form an actual performing group, Don Cornelius, the founder of Soul Train, paired Jeffrey Daniel and Jody Watley, two of his top dancers, with Gary Mumford, who initially sang lead. Later, Gerald Brown and then Howard Hewett replaced Mumford.

While Jeffrey Daniel was content with dancing, Jody Watley aspired to sing and write songs. "A Night To Remember" is one of the few songs where she takes the lead vocal, showcasing her vocal talent. Eventually, in 1983, Watley left the group to pursue a successful solo career, earning the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1988.

In the music video for "A Night To Remember," created for airing on BET after the network's launch in 1980, Shalamar depicted a narrative with Jody Watley and Howard Hewett enjoying a romantic date. Jeffrey Daniel played the role of their bartender/butler in the video. The song itself revolves around Watley and Hewett celebrating their love on a memorable night. As they raise a toast, the lyrics acknowledge their ex-partners who abandoned the idea of love, making the night even more special.

"A Night To Remember" became a significant hit in the UK, reaching #5 on the charts. When Shalamar received an invitation to perform the song on the popular Top Of The Pops show, there was a challenge as the full group couldn't make the trip. In a creative solution, Jeffrey Daniel suggested doing a solo dance routine to the song, which was accepted since performances on the show were typically lip-synched.

Daniel, renowned for his exceptional dancing skills, delivered an unforgettable performance, incorporating popping, locking, and a mesmerizing moonwalk (then known as a "backslide") where he seemed to glide effortlessly across the stage. This routine made history on Top Of The Pops and introduced these dance moves to the UK audience. Daniel's success continued, as he returned to the show a few weeks later for another solo routine to the same song. Although Michael Jackson famously performed the moonwalk a year later on the Motown 25th anniversary TV special, he credited Jeffrey Daniel as his inspiration, who was present in the audience that night.
