L’any 1981, Luther Vandross va fer un salt valent des de l’ombra de la indústria musical fins al centre de l’escenari amb el seu single de debut “Never Too Much”. Escrit, compost, produït i interpretat íntegrament per Vandross, el tema era una declaració — no només d’amor, sinó d’independència artística. Va pujar al número 1 de la llista R&B de Billboard als EUA, va arribar al número 4 de la Dance Club Songs i es va colar al Hot 100 en el número 33. Al Regne Unit va arribar fins al número 44.

La cançó és absolutament Vandross: veus sedoses, arranjaments exuberants i lletres que transmeten una devoció desfermada per un amor tan intens que altera el dia a dia — inclosa la feina. Aquella exposició va preparar el terreny per al seu debut en solitari, i l’àlbum “Never Too Much” va acabar venent més de dos milions de còpies, obtenint nominacions als Grammy com a Millor Artista Novell i Millor Interpretació Vocal R&B Masculina el 1982.

El videoclip del single, que mostrava Vandross en un estudi de gravació, capturava l’essència d’un home finalment en el seu element — creant la seva pròpia música, amb les seves pròpies paraules, segons les seves pròpies regles. Just a year earlier, Vandross had begun gaining recognition as the guest vocalist for the Italian-American studio group Change, delivering the 1980 hits “The Glow of Love” and “Searching.” That exposure set the stage for his solo debut, and “Never Too Much”, the album, went on to sell over two million copies, earning Vandross Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male in 1982.

The single’s music video, featuring Vandross in a recording studio, captured the essence of a man finally in his element—crafting his own music, in his own words, on his own terms. In 1989, a remixed version returned to the UK charts, peaking at No. 13.
