"Geno" és un senzill dels Dexys Midnight Runners llançat el 1980. La cançó ret homenatge al cantant de soul Geno Washington i es realitza en l’estil reminiscent del Ram Jam Band de Washington. Kevin Rowland i Kevin Archer van col·laborar en la cançó, amb Rowland creant la lletra per a la música d'Archer.

Tot i la resistència inicial d'EMI, la seva discogràfica, Dexys Midnight Runners es van mantenir ferms en la seva decisió de llançar "Geno" per sobre de "Breakin' Down the Walls of Heartache" com a senzill. Aquesta decisió va ser un èxit significatiu per a la banda, ja que el single va arribar al número u de les llistes del Regne Unit el 3 de maig i es va mantenir allà durant dues setmanes. Finalment, "Breakin' Down the Walls of Heartache" va ser la cara B del disc.

El record de Kevin Rowland de veure Geno Washington al Railway Hotel de Harrow serveix com a inspiració per a la lletra  de "Geno". La cançó recorda vívidament l'experiència, destacant l'autenticitat de la lletra. Tot i tenir només 15 anys en aquell moment i estar envoltat de nens més grans, Rowland va quedar profundament influït per l'atmosfera i l'energia de l'espectacle. Reflexionant sobre l'esdeveniment, reconeix que potser no va ser el millor concert al qual va assistir, però el seu impacte en ell va ser significatiu, acabant per conduir a la creació de la cançó.

La inclusió del crit "¡Geno! ¡Geno! ¡Geno!" al principi i al final de la cançó afegeix un toc autèntic, fent ressò de l'atmosfera entusiasta de les actuacions en directe de Geno Washington. Aquest crit, pres del soroll de la multitud a l'àlbum en directe de Van Morrison "It's Too Late to Stop Now", fa homenatge a la presència escènica enèrgica de Washington i a l'emoció generada entre el públic abans de les seves actuacions. A més, el riff del saxofon a "Geno" pren inspiració de "(I Gotta) Hold on to My Love" de Washington.

L'autenticitat de les escenes del vídeo amb la banda corrent per carrerons i saltant sobre barreres de tiquets de l'estació de tren, no era només per l'espectacle. Segons Al Archer, membre de la banda, ells mateixos van fer aquestes coses.

"Geno" de Dexys Midnight Runners potser va ser una sensació al Regne Unit, però el seu impacte no es va sentir als EUA a causa de limitacions de distribució. La banda assoliria més tard l'èxit internacional amb el seu èxit de 1983 "Come On Eileen", que va encapçalar les llistes als EUA i es va convertir en un element habitual a MTV.

"Geno" is a single by Dexys Midnight Runners released in 1980. The song pays homage to soul singer Geno Washington and is performed in a style reminiscent of Washington's Ram Jam Band. Kevin Rowland and Kevin Archer collaborated on the song, with Rowland crafting the lyrics to Archer's music. 

Despite initial resistance from EMI, their record label, Dexys Midnight Runners stood firm in their decision to release "Geno" over "Breakin' Down the Walls of Heartache" as a single. This choice was a significant success for the band, as the single reach the number one on the UK Singles Chart on May 3 staying there for two weeks. Finally "Breakin' Down the Walls of Heartache" was the B-side of the single. 

Kevin Rowland's recollection of seeing Geno Washington at the Railway Hotel in Harrow serves as the inspiration for the lyrics of "Geno." He vividly remembers the experience, emphasizing the authenticity of the lyrics. Despite being only 15 years old at the time and surrounded by older kids, Rowland was deeply influenced by the atmosphere and energy of the performance. Reflecting on the event, he acknowledges that it may not have been the greatest concert he attended, but its impact on him was significant, ultimately leading to the creation of the song.

The inclusion of the "Geno! Geno! Geno!" chant at the beginning and end of the song adds an authentic touch, echoing the enthusiastic atmosphere of Geno Washington's live performances. This chant, sampled from crowd noises on Van Morrison's live album "It's Too Late to Stop Now," pays homage to Washington's energetic stage presence and the excitement generated among the audience before his performances. Additionally, the saxophone riff in "Geno" draws inspiration from Washington's "(I Gotta) Hold on to My Love".

The authenticity of the scenes in the "Geno" video, featuring the band running around alleyways and jumping over railway station ticket barriers, wasn't just for show. According to Al Archer, the band member, they actually did those things themselves. 

Dexys Midnight Runners' "Geno" may have been a UK sensation, but its impact wasn't felt in the US due to distribution limitations. The band would later achieve international success with their 1983 hit "Come On Eileen," which topped the charts in the US and became a fixture on MTV.
