“If You Love Somebody Set Them Free” va ser el primer single del debut en solitari de Sting, “The Dream of the Blue Turtles”, significant la seva transició de The Police a la seva carrera en solitari. El videoclip de la cançó va ser dirigit per Kevin Godley i Lol Creme, que ja havien creat vídeos icònics per a The Police, com “Every Breath You Take” i “Wrapped Around Your Finger”. Filmada en un plató de París el 1985, el vídeo utilitzava tècniques innovadores de composició per a l’època. Cada músic va ser gravat individualment davant d’un fons verd, i les imatges es van superposar i manipular durant el procés de postproducció.

Aquest procés va permetre incorporar efectes visuals com canvis de velocitat i aparences alterades, però les limitacions de la tecnologia d’edició abans de l’era digital van fer que cada capa afegida reduís la qualitat general del vídeo. El director Kevin Godley va reflexionar posteriorment sobre això, assenyalant que, tot i que el producte final, amb una estètica granulada i rugosa, hauria millorat amb eines digitals modernes, el vídeo aconseguia transmetre eficaçment la visió creativa. Malgrat els desafiaments tècnics, el videoclip continua sent un exemple destacat de la innovació dels vídeos musicals dels anys 80.

“If You Love Somebody Set Them Free” was the first single from Sting’s debut solo album, “The Dream of the Blue Turtles”, and marked his transition from The Police to a solo career. Sting wrote and recorded the song during a break from The Police following their “Synchronicity” tour in 1984. The Police briefly reunited in 1986 but disbanded after just three concerts and an unfinished album. Sting’s solo career allowed him more creative freedom, working with session musicians rather than a fixed band. Meanwhile, his former bandmates Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland found success in their respective solo endeavors: Copeland as a sought-after film composer and Summers in niche music projects. 

Sting wrote “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free” as a response to “Every Breath You Take,”his hit with The Police, which explored themes of control and obsession. Sting described it as both a hymn to his newfound freedom and a counterpoint to the darker issues of surveillance and possessiveness in his earlier work. He believed the highest compliment one could give a partner was to acknowledge their freedom, emphasizing that true appreciation comes without ownership.

The music video was directed by Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, who had previously crafted iconic videos for The Police, including “Every Breath You Take” and “Wrapped Around Your Finger.” Filmed on a soundstage in Paris in 1985, the video employed innovative compositing techniques for its time. Each musician’s performance was shot individually on a green-screen set, and the footage was layered and manipulated during post-production.

This process allowed for visual effects like speed changes and altered appearances, but due to the limitations of pre-digital editing technology, each added layer reduced the overall quality. Director Kevin Godley later reflected on this, noting that while the grainy and scratchy final product would have benefited from modern digital tools, it still effectively delivered the creative vision. Despite its technical challenges, the video remains a standout example of 1980s music video innovation.
