In 1967, Jackie Wilson recorded “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher”, a track that would not only mark a high point in his career but also become a celebrated soul anthem. Yet behind its joyous sound lies a lesser-known story of creative reshuffling, record label politics, and a make-or-break studio session.

The song was originally written by Raynard Miner and Carl Smith, staff writers at Chicago’s Chess Records. It was first recorded by the vocal group The Dells under the title “Higher and Higher”, with the refrain “My love keeps on growing higher and higher”, but their version was never released. Later, fellow songwriter Gary Jackson reworked the lyrics and structure and pitched the revamped song to Carl Davis at Brunswick Records—removing Chess producer Billy Davis from the credits in the process.

Jackie Wilson was brought in to record the new version, but he initially sang it as a slow soul ballad. Davis, wanting something more rhythmic and dynamic, pushed Wilson to match the driving percussion. Wilson responded by cutting the final vocal in a single take—infusing it with the energy and charisma that would define the track.

The recording featured members of Motown’s legendary Funk Brothers, who frequently moonlighted in Chicago sessions. Bassist James Jamerson, drummer Richard “Pistol” Allen, guitarist Robert White, and keyboardist Johnny Griffith provided the tight, danceable groove that carried the song.

Upon release, “Higher and Higher” soared to #1 on the US R&B charts and broke into the Top 10 of the pop charts. In the UK, it peaked at #11 in 1969 and returned to the charts with successful reissues in 1975 and 1987.
