In 1985, Leslie Wunderman, then performing under the name "Les Lee," recorded dance singles aimed at the club scene. She and producer Ric Wake loved the track, so Wunderman borrowed $6,000 from her father to record a polished version. This recording caught the attention of Clive Davis, who signed her to a "single-option album" deal, allowing the label to drop her if the single failed but retain her if it succeeded.
