"Good Vibrations" és una cançó composta per Brian Wilson amb lletra de Mike Love. Capitol Records va ser inicialment reticent a llançar-la com a senzill a causa de la seva durada de 3:35, que es considerava llarga per a una cançó pop en aquell moment. Tanmateix, Wilson va convèncer-los de fer-ho, i els seus instints van ser encertats quan "Good Vibrations" va esdevenir un gran èxit. Kaye va recordar en una entrevista com Wilson mai va modificar la part de baix durant les 12 sessions de gravació, tot i canviar la resta de la música múltiples vegades. Va descriure la línia de baix com a reminiscència d'un estil jazzístic, amb Kaye tocant la part superior i Lyle Ritz tocant la part inferior. Tot i que Mike Love i Brian Wilson lideraven habitualment les veus de la banda, Carl Wilson va ser qui va assumir el lideratge en aquesta cançó després que inicialment es considerés Dennis Wilson.

El so agut i distintiu de "Good Vibrations" es va produir utilitzant un electro-theremin, un dispositiu que imita el theremin, un instrument que crea so a través de camps elèctrics sense contacte físic. El theremin, inventat el 1919, era difícil de tocar i sovint s'utilitzava en bandes sonores de pel·lícules de terror. Brian Wilson volia un so únic i d'alta freqüència per complementar els violoncels de la cançó i va pensar en el theremin, però no en va trobar cap. En lloc d'això, va contractar Paul Tanner, un ex-trombonista, que havia desenvolupat l'electro-theremin amb Bob Whitsell.

Al documental “Long Promised Road”, Don Was explora les tècniques de producció de Brian Wilson, reproduint pistes múltiples de "Good Vibrations", però admet que no pot comprendre completament com Brian va crear aquesta obra mestra. La cançó, construïda a partir de fragments gravats en quatre estudis diferents, barreja audàcia experimental amb una atractiva sensació pop. Malgrat la seva complexitat, "Good Vibrations" emergeix com un senzill de pop perfectament elaborat i emocionant. "Good Vibrations" is a song composed by Brian Wilson with lyrics by Mike Love. Brian Wilson explained to Rolling Stone that the inspiration for “Good Vibrations” came from his mother, who talked about "vibrations" as invisible feelings. She also mentioned how dogs would respond differently to different people, which led them to discuss "good vibrations." Wilson became obsessed with the concept, working tirelessly on the track while the rest of the band toured. During this time, Wilson entered a strange phase, spending time in bed and working on music in unconventional ways, like using a sandbox. Despite his eccentric behavior, many considered him a genius due to the groundbreaking songs and recording techniques he developed. Brian Wilson referred to "Good Vibrations" as "the summation of my musical vision," a perfect blend of imagination, talent, production, and spirituality. He composed the song while on LSD, which likely contributed to its psychedelic and experimental nature, capturing the essence of a vivid, transcendent experience.

"Good Vibrations" was uniquely recorded in fragments across six different studios in Los Angeles, making it one of the first pop songs assembled from various parts. The song was recorded over two months with top Los Angeles session musicians rather than the Beach Boys themselves. Over 90 hours of studio time and 70 hours of tape were used, with at least 12 musicians involved, including Glen Campbell (lead guitar), Hal Blaine (drums), Larry Knechtel (organ), and Carol Kaye (bass guitar). Kaye recalled in an interview how Wilson never altered the bass part during the 12 recording sessions, even though he changed the rest of the music multiple times. She described the bass line as having a jazz-like feel, with Kaye playing the upper part and Lyle Ritz handling the lower part. While Mike Love and Brian Wilson typically led the band's vocals, Carl Wilson took the lead on this song after Dennis Wilson was initially considered. 

The distinctive high-pitched sound in "Good Vibrations" was produced using an electro-theremin, a device that mimics the theremin, an instrument that creates sound through electric fields without physical contact. The theremin, invented in 1919, was difficult to play and often used in horror movie soundtracks. Brian Wilson wanted a unique, high-frequency sound to complement the cellos in the track and thought of the theremin, but couldn't find one. Instead, he enlisted Paul Tanner, a former trombonist, who had developed the electro-theremin with Bob Whitsell.

Mike Love wrote the lyrics as a "flowery poem" inspired by the psychedelic culture of the 1960s. While not explicitly about drugs, Love acknowledged that the era's psychedelic vibe influenced his writing. The instrumental track, composed by Brian Wilson, was so unique and experimental that Love felt the lyrics needed to capture both the feeling of the music and the spirit of the times. He focused on the universal theme of boy-girl attraction, creating the memorable chorus line, "I'm pickin' up good vibrations, she's giving me the excitations." 

Brian Wilson began working on the track while completing the Beach Boys' landmark album “Pet Sounds”, which he felt had been poorly received by critics. He poured extra effort into "Good Vibrations" to prove his artistic vision. This song marked the beginning of an ambitious project titled “Smile”, an album that Wilson recorded over 50 sessions but never released. It was eventually completed in 2004.
