"I Will Follow" és la primera pista del primer àlbum, "Boy", llançat l'octubre de 1980. El cantant Bono va escriure la lletra com a homenatge a la seva mare, que va morir quan només tenia 14 anys.

Segons Bono, "I Will Follow" explora el tema de l'amor incondicional, especialment entre una mare i un fill. Es pot veure la cançó com a una encarnació de la idea que l'amor d'una mare és tan ferm que res no el pot tallar, similar a la noció bíblica de l'amor incondicional de Déu. Bono canta la lletra des de la perspectiva d'una mare, cosa que reconeix pot semblar inusual, però creu que captura la intensitat i el compromís de l'amor maternal.

"I Will Follow" es va escriure poc abans que U2 comencés a gravar el seu àlbum debut, "Boy". Durant els assajos inicials, les tensions eren fortes mentre Bono lluitava per transmetre el riff de guitarra agressiu que imaginava. Frustrat, va agafar la guitarra d'Edge i va tocar amb força l’acord de dues cordes que Edge havia creat, amb l'objectiu de capturar l’essencia que buscava. Bono la va descriure com una cançó de ràbia, comparant el seu impacte amb un clau que s'enfonsa al lòbul frontal. El productor Steve Lillywhite va notar similituds entre l'inici de la cançó i el treball de guitarra de John McKay a "Jigsaw Feeling" de Siouxsie and the Banshees, destacant-los com pràcticament idèntics.

El primer vídeo musical d'U2, dirigit per Meiert Avis, mostra la banda interpretant "I Will Follow" davant d'una imatge gegantina de la portada de l'àlbum. Produït a principis dels anys 80, va utilitzar la tecnologia de pantalla verda, tot i que amb algunes imperfeccions visibles com vores rugoses al voltant dels membres de la banda superposats a la imatge de fons.

"The Electric Co." és una pista del primer àlbum "Boy" llançat el 1980. El títol "Electric Co." prové de "electric convulsion therapy", un tractament que involucra descàrregues elèctriques utilitzat en psiquiatria. La cançó serveix com a protesta contra aquesta pràctica, inspirada per l’experiència d’un amic de la banda que va intentar suïcidar-se i posteriorment va ser sotmès a aquesta teràpia en un hospital psiquiàtric.

"The Electric Co." va guanyar popularitat quan es va incloure una versió en directe al seu àlbum de 1983 "Under A Blood Red Sky", després del seu àlbum d'èxit "War". Durant la interpretació que van fer en directe de la peça al festival Rockpalast a Alemanya, Bono hi va intercalar breument 27 segons de "Send In The Clowns" de Stephen Sondheim sense haver obtingut permís. Com a resultat, U2 van haver de pagar 50.000 dòlars a Sondheim i excloure aquest segment de les versions americanes de l'àlbum. La versió sense editar amb l'excerpte no autoritzat es manté en les edicions no americanes de "Under A Blood Red Sky", ja que les lleis de drets d'autor nord-americans no s'apliquen a aquestes edicions.

"The Electric Co." destaca per un notable pas de guitarra al pont que esdevé un moment definidor per a la banda. Durant aquesta secció, la música es descompon en ecos ambientals, amb la veu de Bono fusionant-se com un altre instrument en lloc de centrar-se en la lletra. Després, The Edge torna amb la seva guitarra, reunint de nou la banda, mentre que la bateria de Larry Mullen Jr. intensifica el ritme. Cap al final de la cançó, hi ha una referència amorosa i evident a The Who.

"I Will Follow" is the opening track from the debut album, “Boy”, released in October 1980. Lead singer Bono wrote the lyrics as a tribute to his mother, who passed away when he was just 14 years old.

According to Bono, "I Will Follow" explores the theme of unconditional love, particularly between a mother and child. He sees the song as embodying the idea that a mother's love is so steadfast that nothing can sever it, akin to the biblical notion of God's unconditional love. Bono sings the lyrics from the perspective of a mother, which he acknowledges may seem unusual, but he believes it captures the intensity and commitment of maternal love. 

"I Will Follow" was written shortly before U2 began recording their debut album, “Boy”. During initial rehearsals, tensions ran high as Bono struggled to convey the aggressive guitar riff he envisioned. Frustrated, he took over Edge's guitar and played forcefully on the two-stringed chord Edge had created, aiming to capture the urgency he sought. Bono described the song as emerging from a place of rage, likening its impact to a nail being driven into one's frontal lobe. Producer Steve Lillywhite noted similarities between the song's beginning and John McKay's guitar work on Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Jigsaw Feeling", highlighting them as nearly identical.

U2's first music video, directed by Meiert Avis, features the band performing "I Will Follow" in front of a giant image of the album cover. Produced in the early '80s, it utilized green screen technology, albeit with some visible imperfections such as rough edges around the band members superimposed against the background image.
