"The Unforgettable Fire" és una cançó del quart àlbum homònim de U2, llançat el 1984. També es va publicar com a segon single de l'àlbum l’abril de 1985. L'àlbum va ser enregistrat en l'ambient acústic d'una sala rodona gòtica al Slane Castle, on la banda va trobar inspiració en el magnífic so. Produïda per Brian Eno i Daniel Lanois, la pista destaca per la seva composició vasta i expressiva, desviant-se de les estructures tradicionals de cançons de rock o pop amb el seu enfocament no lineal a la melodia vocal.

La inspiració per la cançó va sorgir d'una exposició d'art amb obres de supervivents dels bombardejos atòmics d'Hiroshima i Nagasaki, que la banda va visitar al The Peace Museum de Chicago. "The Unforgettable Fire" va ser el primer número u de U2 a Irlanda i va arribar al número sis a les llistes de singles del Regne Unit, convertint-se en el seu tercer èxit en el Top Ten.

La cançó es caracteritza pel seu so atmosfèric, amb un treball de guitarra ambiental i un arranjament de cordes de Noel Kelehan. Inicialment, va començar com una breu composició de piano del guitarrista The Edge durant una sessió amb Jimmy Destri de Blondie. The Edge la va imaginar com una possible peça per a la banda sonora d'una pel·lícula, però va tenir dificultats amb la seva direcció lírica i vocal.

A finals de 1983, durant les sessions per al seu àlbum a la casa al mar de Bono a Bray, comtat de Wicklow, The Edge va redescobrir la peça de piano en una cinta de cassette. Col·laborant amb Bono, la van transformar afegint sintetitzadors Yamaha DX7 i una caixa de ritmes. Junts van escriure ràpidament els versos, acabant la seva transformació des de la forma original.

La cançó explora temes d’amor perdut i nostàlgia a través de frases com "Stay this time" (Queda't aquest cop), "Come and take me away" (Vine i porta’m), i "Save your love / don’t push me too far" (Guarda el teu amor / no em pressionis massa). La cançó, admirada pel pare de Bono, té associacions profundes amb Tòquio, simbolitzant una ciutat que emergeix com un fènix de les cendres. Simultàniament, s’entén com una cançó d'amor, possiblement fent referència a la dona de Bono, Ali, amb frases com "your eyes, as black as coals" (els teus ulls, negres com el carbó).

"The Unforgettable Fire" is a song from the fourth album of the same name, released in 1984. It was also issued as the album's second single in April 1985. The album was recorded in the unique acoustic environment of a round gothic ballroom at Slane Castle, where the band found inspiration in the magnificent sound. Produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, the title track stands out for its vast and expressive composition, deviating from traditional rock or pop song structures with its non-linear approach to vocal melody. 

The song's inspiration came from an art exhibition featuring works by survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which the band visited at The Peace Museum in Chicago. "The Unforgettable Fire" marked U2's first number one single in Ireland and reached number six on the UK Singles Chart, becoming their third top-ten hit in the United Kingdom.

The song is characterized by its atmospheric sound, featuring ambient guitar work and a string arrangement by Noel Kelehan. Initially, began as a short piano composition by guitarist the Edge during a demo session with Jimmy Destri of Blondie. The Edge envisioned it as a potential film soundtrack piece but struggled with its lyrical and vocal direction. 

In late 1983, during sessions for their album at Bono's seaside home in Bray, County Wicklow, the Edge rediscovered the piano piece on a cassette tape. Collaborating with Bono, they transformed it with the addition of Yamaha DX7 synthesizers and a drum machine, giving the song a new identity. Together, they quickly wrote the verse section, solidifying its evolution from its original form.

Bono characterizes the lyrics of as a sketch, exploring themes of love lost and longing through evocative lines such as "Stay this time," "Come and take me away," and "Save your love / don’t push me too far." The song, admired by Bono's father, holds deep associations with Tokyo, symbolizing a city emerging resiliently like a phoenix from ashes. Simultaneously, it doubles as a love song, possibly referencing Bono's wife, Ali, with lyrics like "your eyes, as black as coals."
