McCartney, assegut al seu piano, va crear la melodia commovedora de la cançó, imaginant-se que podria ser interpretada per un artista com Ray Charles.

La trajectòria de "The Long and Winding Road" va prendre un gir inesperat durant la dissolució dels Beatles. Enregistrada inicialment com una simple balada al gener de 1969, la cançó va sotmetre's a un procés transformador quan Phil Spector, conegut pel seu mètode "Wall Of Sound", va ser contractat per produir l'àlbum el 1970. L'enfocament de Spector implicava eliminar la major part dels instruments dels Beatles i introduir un arranjament amb una secció de corda i un cor.

Tot i ser l'autor de la cançó, Paul McCartney es va distanciar de les sessions de producció. Quan va escoltar la versió final de Spector, McCartney va expressar el seu descontentament, veient-ho com una versió totalment diferent de la seva visió original. McCartney va intentar incloure la versió arranjada per Glyn Johns a l'àlbum, provocant conflictes interns dins del grup. Mentre McCartney insistia que Spector havia "esquartejat" la cançó, George Harrison i John Lennon van donar suport a la feina d’Spector. La disputa va afegir tensions a les ja fracturades dinàmiques del grup. La cançó va tenir presència en les actuacions en directe de McCartney. Durant la seva gira Wings Over America del 1976, Paul va incloure "The Long and Winding Road" al seu repertori, interpretant la cançó com hauria volgut que aparegués a l'àlbum "Let it be".

"The Long and Winding Road" stands as a poignant masterpiece by the Beatles, a ballad that encapsulates the essence of a journey filled with reflections and emotional depth. Penned by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney, the song carries a significant weight, particularly as it became the group's final number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. Released in May 1970, just a month after the Beatles' break-up, it marks the end of an era with its soul-stirring melody and McCartney's evocative vocals.

The inspiration for "The Long and Winding Road" flowed from the serene landscapes of Scotland, particularly the B842 that winds its way down the east coast of Kintyre, near Paul McCartney's Scottish farmhouse. McCartney, seated at his piano, crafted the song's heartfelt melody, envisioning it to be interpreted by an artist like Ray Charles. 

The trajectory of "The Long and Winding Road" took an unexpected turn during the dissolution of The Beatles. Initially recorded as a simple ballad in January 1969, the song underwent a transformative process when Phil Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, was enlisted to produce the album in 1970. Spector's approach involved stripping away most of The Beatles' instruments and introducing a lush arrangement featuring a string section and choir.

Despite being the songwriter, Paul McCartney distanced himself from the production sessions. When he heard Spector's final version, McCartney vehemently expressed his displeasure, perceiving it as a departure from the original vision. McCartney sought to include the Glyn Johns-mixed version on the album, leading to internal conflicts within the band. While McCartney insisted that Spector had "butchered" the song, George Harrison and John Lennon supported Spector's work. The disagreement added strain to the already fracturing group dynamics. In retrospect, McCartney maintains his dissatisfaction, reflecting the complex interplay of creative vision and divergent opinions during the turbulent era of The Beatles' dissolution.

"The Long and Winding Road" holds a distinctive place in The Beatles' catalog as the only song where John Lennon assumed the bass-playing role. In typical circumstances, Lennon served as the band's rhythm guitarist. However, the production dynamics led to the removal of parts played by George Harrison and Ringo Starr by Phil Spector, resulting in their absence from the final version of the song. 

Despite Paul McCartney's efforts to prevent its release as a single in the UK, "The Long and Winding Road" ascended to the top of the charts in the United States, where it held the number-one position for two weeks. 

The song continued to have a lasting impact on McCartney's live performances. During his 1976 Wings Over America tour, McCartney included "The Long and Winding Road" in his setlist, playing the song the way he would have wanted it to appear on the “Let it be” album.
