"Owner of a Lonely Heart" és una cançó del grup britànic de rock progressiu Yes. És el primer tema i senzill del seu onzè àlbum d'estudi del 1983 "90125".

"90125" va ser una desviació dràstica del so progressiu de Yes dels anys 70, que contenia guitarra i sintetitzadors distorsionats que eren populars en aquell moment. Amb l'ajuda de MTV, Yes va trobar de sobte una nova audiència, que de vegades es va sorprendre en saber que gran part del seu catàleg posterior constava de peces complexes que sovint duraven més de 10 minuts. "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" és una traïció total a tot el que la banda havia fet abans. També va ser un puntada al seu cul, a vegades, les coses surten així. I per què? Perquè aquesta cançó no havia de ser una cançó de Yes. La banda que va gravar la cançó ni tan sols s'havia de dir Yes. Yes s'havia trencat, estaven acabats. Els membres de la banda volien fer altres coses, i només van acceptar dir-se Yes perquè el seu segell discogràfic els ho va exigir. La història de la franquícia Yes ja era molt complicada abans que "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" arribés a ser. Però la cançó es va convertir, amb diferència, en el major èxit d'una banda que temps enrera s'havia decidit a gravar cançons que no podien convertir-se mai en èxits, ni que fos per disseny.

La cançó va ser escrita pels membres de Yes Jon Anderson, Trevor Horn, Trevor Rabin i Chris Squire. La va cantar Anderson, que acabava de tornar al grup des que va marxar l'any 1980. Va explicar el seu paper en el moment d’escriure-la: "La cançó ja estava acabada, però no hi havia versos. Havien provat alguns versos i realment no funcionaven, tenien la tornada, tenien l'arranjament però alguna cosa fallava. Vaig entrar i totes les cançons estaven pràcticament acabades, però hi havia una manca de cors aquí i de versos allà. Vaig estar tres setmanes amb Trevor i vam completar-ho tot. Recordo estar assegut amb Trevor Rabin i vam començar: "Move yourself, you always live your life never thinking of the future” (Mou-te, sempre vius la teva vida sense pensar en el futur). Aquesta va ser la frase que vaig escriure. I després deia: “Prove yourself, win or lose" (Demostra't, guanya o perd). I després va dir: "Jon, me n'he d'anar. Tu segueix". Així que vaig continuar escrivint els versos de la lletra. La tornada ja estava ben organitzada per Trevor".

Trevor Horn, abans dels Buggles, va produir l'àlbum "90125". Horn va prendre el relleu de Jon Anderson com a cantant principal de Yes per al seu àlbum de 1980 "Drama", i després d'una gira per donar suport a l'àlbum, la banda es va separar i Horn es va centrar en el treball de producció. Quan Yes es va tornar a formar per a "90125", Anderson va tornar juntament amb Tony Kaye, Chris Squire i Alan White, i Horn va produir l'àlbum. Aquesta cançó va arribar al número 1 als EUA la setmana del 21 de gener de 1984 i va seguir-hi la setmana següent, quan al Regne Unit una altra cançó produïda per Horn, "Relax" de Frankie Goes To Hollywood, va ocupar el primer lloc. Això va fer que Horn fos l'únic productor a tenir èxits simultàniament número 1 tant al Regne Unit com als Estats Units amb diferents cançons de diferents artistes. Trevor Horn es va convertir en un dels productors definitoris dels anys 80.

"Owner of a Lonely Heart" tracta de reconèixer l'individualisme i el poder de l'autodeterminació. La lletra subratlla la importància d'assumir riscos i escollir ser diferent. La tornada emfatitza la idea que és molt millor "posseir" un cor solitari que un cor trencat, indicant el valor d'estar sol i valorar-se a un mateix en lloc de confiar en algú per prendre decisions per tu. La cançó en última instància anima a prendre el control de la pròpia vida i a fer el teu propi destí.

“Owner of a Lonely Heart” is a song by British progressive rock band Yes. It is the first track and single from their 1983’s eleventh studio album “90125”.  

“90125” was a drastic departure from Yes' progressive sound in the '70s, containing distorted guitar and synthesizers that were popular at the time. With help from MTV, Yes suddenly found a new audience, who were sometimes shocked to learn that much of their back catalog consisted of complex pieces that would often run well over 10 minutes. “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” is a total betrayal of everything that the band had done before. Not coincidentally, it also kicks ass. Sometimes, things work out like that. This track wasn’t supposed to be a Yes song. The band that recorded the song wasn’t even supposed to be called Yes. Yes had broken up. They were finished. The members of the band wanted to move onto other things, and they only assented to calling themselves Yes because their label demanded it. The history of the Yes franchise was already plenty complicated before “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” had come to be. But the song became by far the biggest hit from a band who had once made a point of recording songs that couldn’t become hits, almost by design.

This was written by Yes members Jon Anderson, Trevor Horn, Trevor Rabin and Chris Squire. It was sung by Anderson, who had just returned to the group since leaving in 1980. He told about his role in writing it: "The song was already finished, but there were no verses. They had tried some verses and it really wasn't working. They had the chorus, they had the arrangement. I came in and all the songs were virtually put together, but there was a lack of choruses here, verses there. I went in for three weeks with Trevor and sort of filled everything in. I remember sitting with Trevor Rabin and we started off, 'Move yourself, you always live your life never thinking of the future’. That was the line I wrote. And then he'd say, 'Prove yourself, win or lose'. And then he said, 'Jon, I've got to go. You carry on.' So I just carried on writing the lyrics to the verses. The chorus was already well organized by Trevor."

Trevor Horn, formerly of the Buggles, produced the “90125” album. Horn took over for Jon Anderson as lead singer of Yes for for their 1980 album “Drama”, and after a tour to support the album the band broke up and Horn focused on production work. When Yes re-formed for “90125” Anderson returned along with Tony Kaye, Chris Squire and Alan White, and Horn produced the album. This song hit #1 in the US the week of January 21, 1984, and held the position the following week, when in the UK another Horn-produced song, "Relax" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, claimed the top spot. This made Horn the only producer to have simultaneous #1 hits in both the UK and the US with different songs by different artists. Trevor Horn went on to become one of the defining producers of the ’80s. 

“Owner of a Lonely Heart” is about recognizing individualism and the power of self-determination. The lyrics emphasize the importance of taking risks and choosing to be different. The chorus emphasizes the idea that it is far better to “own” a lonely heart than a broken heart, signaling the value of being alone and valuing one’s self instead of relying on someone else to make decisions for you. The song ultimately encourages taking control of one's life and making their own destiny.
