"Waterloo" és el primer senzill del segon àlbum del grup pop suec. Aquest també va ser el primer senzill que es va acreditar al grup sota el nom d'ABBA.

El 6 d'abril de 1974 va ser una de les nits realment inoblidables de la història del Festival d'Eurovisió. Enmig d'una quantitat d'artistes sosos i ben polits, dos homes i dues dones van pujar a l'escenari del The Dome de Brighton, Anglaterra. El grup portava els vestits més glamurosos i brillants del moment, seguint la moda del glam de The Sweet, Gary Glitter i David Bowie que era la tendència de llavors.  Les dolces balades i el pop llafiscós que van dominar la resta d'aquella vetllada van ser brutalment escombrades pel grup que va irrompre amb una cançó de ritme rock amb una melodia pop enganxosa, tot embolicat en un paquet d'energia irresistible glorificat per les dues cantants femenines. El grup i la cançó? ABBA, per descomptat, i 'Waterloo'. No cal dir que els suecs van ser els vencedors d'aquell any al Festival de la Cançó d'Eurovisió, i aquella aparició els va donar un gran èxit mundial, el primer d'una llarga llista d'èxits internacionals. Fins i tot a Estats Units, on ningú fa cas a Eurovisió, “Waterloo” va ser un èxit. S’ha de dir també que van revolucionar el carrincló Festival d’Eurovisió. Va haver un abans i un després d’ABBA, van crear tendència i les dues següents edicions les van guanyar grups succedanis dels suecs. 

A "Waterloo", les cantants estan comparant la història de la derrota de Napoleó a Waterloo amb la seva pròpia situació. Les cantants relaten una història on el protagonista es troba en una relació incòmoda en la qual sent que està perdent la batalla però sembla que tampoc se’n pot escapar. La tornada subratlla que, tot i que ha estat derrotat, continua prometent estimar la seva parella per sempre més, tot i que sembla que no pot escapar de la situació. Finalment, s'enfronta al seu Waterloo i es resigna al fet que el seu destí és, en certa manera, estar amb la seva parella.

ABBA no només va gravar aquesta cançó en el seu suec nadiu i després en anglès, sinó que també van gravar una versió en francès per als mercats francesos i una altra en alemany per als mercats alemanys. També hi ha una versió en francès i en suec que és una remescla de les versions sueca i francesa.

“Waterloo” is the first single from the Swedish pop group second album. This was also the first single to be credited to the group performing under the name ABBA.

April 6, 1974, was one of the truly unforgettable nights in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest. In the midst of a polite and well-behaved line-up of artists, two men and two women rushed on to the stage at The Dome in Brighton, England. The group was wearing the glammest, most glittering costumes this side of The Sweet, Gary Glitter and David Bowie. The sweet ballads and snappy Eurostompers that dominated the rest of that evening were brutally swept aside as the group burst into a song that forged a rocky beat with a catchy pop tune, all wrapped in a package of irresistible energy. The group and the song? ABBA, of course, and ‘Waterloo’. Needless to say, the group were that year’s victors in the Eurovision Song Contest, and the breakthrough they achieved gave them a worldwide mega-hit, the first in a long row of international smashes. It must also be said that they revolutionized the Eurovision Song Contest. There was one before and one after ABBA, they created a trend and the next two editions were won by groups that succeeded the Swedes.

In  “Waterloo” the singers are comparing the story of Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo to their own situation. The narrator is in an uneasy relationship in which they feel they are losing the battle but cannot seem to escape. The chorus emphasizes that although they have been defeated, they continue to promise to love their partner forevermore, even though they can’t seem to escape the situation. Ultimately, they face their Waterloo and resign themselves to the fact that their fate is, in a way, to be with their partner. 

ABBA not only recorded this song in their native Swedish and then in English but they also recorded a version in French for the French markets and one in German for the German markets. There is also a version in both French and Swedish that is an overdubbing of both the Swedish and French versions.
