“I’ll Be Missing You” és una cançó de tribut del 1997 interpretada pel raper Puff Daddy (ara conegut com a Diddy), amb la participació de la cantant de R&B Faith Evans i el grup vocal 112. Va ser llançada com a segon senzill de l’àlbum “No Way Out”, en homenatge al raper Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace, assassinat tràgicament el 9 de març de 1997. Wallace era tant un gran amic de Puff Daddy com el marit de Faith Evans, i tenia contracte amb el segell Bad Boy Records.

La cançó incorpora un sample destacat del tema “Every Breath You Take” (1983) de The Police, amb una adaptació de la tornada cantada per Evans. També inclou elements de l’himne cristià de 1929 “I’ll Fly Away” de Albert E. Brumley, i comença amb una introducció parlada sobre una versió coral de l’“Adagio for Strings” de Samuel Barber.

Després de la mort de B.I.G., Puff Daddy va trobar consol creant aquesta cançó com a tribut personal, afirmant que era una manera de continuar parlant amb el seu amic difunt. El nucli emocional de la lletra la va escriure el raper Sauce Money (Todd Gaither), que també estava plorant la mort de la seva pròpia mare en aquell moment.

Sting, líder de The Police, no va ser contactat prèviament per obtenir permís pel sample, però va acabar donant-lo i rebent crèdit com a compositor, cosa que li ha comportat guanys substancials. Va arribar a actuar amb Puff Daddy i Faith Evans als MTV Video Music Awards. Circulen rumors que Sting va guanyar entre 2.000 i 5.000 dòlars diaris pels drets d’autor; ell no ha negat aquestes xifres, mentre que Diddy ha mantingut el misteri.

La cançó es va convertir en un èxit mundial massiu, assolint el número 1 a països com els Estats Units, el Regne Unit, el Canadà, Alemanya i Austràlia. Als EUA, es va mantenir 11 setmanes al número 1 del Billboard Hot 100 durant l’estiu de 1997. Al Regne Unit, es va convertir en el senzill de rap més venut de la història, amb més de 1,4 milions de còpies venudes. Va ser el segon senzill més venut als EUA aquell any, només darrere de “Candle in the Wind ’97” d’Elton John, un altre homenatge.

El 2007, Puff Daddy la va interpretar al Concert for Diana a Wembley, i això va provocar que la cançó reentrés a les llistes britàniques al lloc 32.

La cançó va guanyar un premi Grammy a Millor Interpretació de Rap en Grup o Dúo, i l’àlbum “No Way Out” va obtenir el Grammy a Millor Àlbum de Rap. Tot i això, no tothom va acceptar les victòries amb entusiasme: Ol’ Dirty Bastard, del grup Wu-Tang Clan, va interrompre la cerimònia dels Grammy visiblement molest.

El videoclip, dirigit per Hype Williams, va ser rodat a Chicago, amb escenes destacades com el passadís de l’aeroport O’Hare i una seqüència de motocicleta en una reserva natural d’Elburn (Illinois). Es va estrenar a mitjans de maig del 1997 a BET i MTV.

“I’ll Be Missing You” is a 1997 tribute song by rapper Puff Daddy (now known as Diddy), featuring R&B singer Faith Evans and vocal group 112. Released in May 1997 as the second single from the album “No Way Out”, it honors the late rapper Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace, who was tragically murdered on March 9, 1997. Wallace was both a close friend of Puff Daddy and the husband of Faith Evans, and was signed to the Bad Boy Records label.

The song features a prominent sample of The Police’s 1983 hit “Every Breath You Take,” with an adapted chorus sung by Evans. It also integrates elements from the 1929 hymn “I’ll Fly Away” by Albert E. Brumley and includes a solemn spoken intro layered over a choral rendition of Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings.”

After B.I.G.’s death, Puff Daddy found solace in creating the song as a personal tribute, describing it as a way to talk to his fallen friend. The emotional core of the lyrics was written by rapper Sauce Money (Todd Gaither), who was mourning the loss of his own mother at the time.

The Police’s frontman Sting was not initially contacted for clearance of the sample, but later granted permission and received songwriting credit, which entitles him to substantial royalties. He even joined Puff Daddy and Faith Evans for a performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. Rumors of Sting earning $2,000 to $5,000 a day from the sample have circulated; Sting has not denied the estimates, while Diddy has played coy about the exact amount.

“I’ll Be Missing You” became a massive commercial success. It topped charts in countries worldwide, including the US, UK, Canada, Germany, and Australia. In the US, it held the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 11 weeks during the summer of 1997. In the UK, it became the best-selling rap single ever, with over 1.4 million copies sold. It was the second-best-selling US single of 1997, behind Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind ’97,” another tribute song. A decade later, in 2007, Puff Daddy performed the song at the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium, prompting a chart resurgence in the UK, where it reentered at #32. 

The track earned a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, and the “No Way Out” album won Best Rap Album. The wins weren’t universally accepted—Wu-Tang Clan’s Ol’ Dirty Bastard famously interrupted the Grammy ceremony in protest, declaring, “Wu-Tang is for the children.”

The music video, directed by Hype Williams, was shot in Chicago, including scenes at O’Hare International Airport’s tunnel walkway and a motorcycle sequence filmed at a prairie preserve in Elburn, Illinois. The video premiered in mid-May 1997 on BET and MTV.
