"Is There Something I Should Know?" va marcar un fet significatiu per a Duran Duran com a primer número u al Regne Unit quan va debutar al capdavant de les llistes el març de 1983. Llançada com a single independent, va aconseguir la rara proesa llavors d'entrar directament al número u de les llistes. "Is There Something I Should Know?" va ser enregistrada als estudis Good Earth de Tony Visconti a Soho, Londres, amb el productor Ian Little, recomanat per Phil Manzanera de Roxy Music. La cançó va passar diverses rondes de mescla a causa de les preocupacions inicials sobre la compressió de la bateria. Les sessions de mescla es van realitzar a diverses localitzacions, incloent Good Earth, Eel Pie Studios, The Gallery i The Power Station a Nova York amb Bob Clearmountain. El teclista Nick Rhodes va recordar estar present en una llarga sessió de mescla amb Clearmountain, inicialment sentint que tenien algo especial, però després decidint que la mescla era massa suau per al so desitjat. La mescla final es va completar amb el productor Alex Sadkin per aconseguir la qualitat sonora buscada per al disc.

"Is There Something I Should Know?" explora temes de comunicació unilateral i el desig de la busqueda d’una comprensió mútua en les relacions. Les icòniques harmonies d'obertura de Simon Le Bon i Andy Taylor amb "Please please tell me now" estableixen un to memorable, recolzat per un simple bombo. També inclou una de les frases més memorables de la dècada: "Don’t say you’re easy on me / You’re about as easy as a nuclear war" (No diguis que ets fàcil amb mi / Ets tan fàcil com una guerra nuclear).

En els seus inicia, els singles de l’àlbum debut de Duran Duran van tenir dificultat per aconseguir ser posats a les emisores de ràdio als Estats Units, ja que tant la banda com el gènere New Romantic eren relativament desconeguts allà. Tot i això, cap al final de 1982, el segon àlbum del grup, "Rio", va començar a guanyar popularitat ràpidament al país, principalment per la difusió dels seus vídeos a MTV. Per capitalitzar aquest moment, la banda i la seva discogràfica van decidir rellançar el seu primer àlbum als Estats Units, incloent-hi el nou single enregistrat "Is There Something I Should Know?". "Is There Something I Should Know?" marked a significant milestone for Duran Duran as their first UK number one hit when it debuted atop the charts in March 1983. Released as a stand-alone single, it achieved the then rare feat of entering the UK charts at number one. The song also found success in the United States, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1983.

"Is There Something I Should Know?" was recorded at Tony Visconti’s Good Earth Studios in Soho, London, with producer Ian Little, who was recommended by Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera. The song underwent several rounds of mixing due to initial concerns about the drum compression. Mixing sessions were conducted at multiple locations including Good Earth, Eel Pie Studios, The Gallery, and The Power Station in New York with Bob Clearmountain. Keyboardist Nick Rhodes recalled being present for an extended mixing session with Clearmountain, initially feeling they had something special, but later deciding the mix was too soft for the desired sound. The final mix was completed with producer Alex Sadkin to achieve the intended sonic quality for the record.

"Is There Something I Should Know?" explores themes of one-sided communication and the longing for mutual understanding in relationships. The iconic opening harmonies of Simon Le Bon and Andy Taylor with "Please please tell me now" set a memorable tone, backed by a simple kick drum. It also features one of the decade's most memorable lyrics: "Don’t say you’re easy on me / You’re about as easy as a nuclear war." 

In the early stages, singles from Duran Duran's self-titled debut album struggled to gain airplay in the United States, as both the band and the New Romantic genre were relatively unknown there, but by the end of 1982, Duran Duran's second album "Rio" started gaining rapid popularity in the US, largely due to extensive airplay of their music videos on MTV. To capitalize on this momentum, the band and their record label decided to re-release their debut album in the US, including the newly recorded single "Is There Something I Should Know?". The song first appeared on a long-playing album in the UK was on the inaugural edition of the "Now That's What I Call Music" compilation series at the end of that year.

The music video directed by Russell Mulcahy blended color clips of the band members dressed in blue shirts and white ties with surreal black-and-white imagery. Released in 1983, it quickly became one of the most popular videos of the year on MTV. The video's conclusion included snippets from several earlier Duran Duran videos, such as "Save a Prayer", "Girls on Film", "Hungry Like the Wolf", "My Own Way", and "Planet Earth". Reflecting on the video, drummer Roger Taylor expressed discomfort with his part where he sings directly to the camera, a moment he continues to find awkward and cringe-worthy to this day.
