"Private Investigations" comença amb una orquestració de sintetitzador de baix to. Aquesta introducció porta a una progressió lenta de piano acompanyada d'una guitarra clàssica. La cançó inclou diversos versos parlats, creant una atmosfera narrativa. En l'edició del senzill, la cançó comença directament amb guitarra acústica, saltant-se la introducció del sintetitzador.
