Escrita i produïda per Benny Andersson i Björn Ulvaeus, “Voulez-Vous” ocupa un lloc especial dins el catàleg d’ABBA, ja que és l’única cançó del grup enregistrada fora de Suècia. La banda en va gravar la base rítmica als Criteria Studios de Miami, el mateix estudi on els Bee Gees havien creat gran part de la seva època disco. Aquella energia tropical es va infiltrar en cada compàs del tema, ple de sintetitzadors, guitarres sincopades i cordes que conviden l’oient a abandonar-se al moment.

Lletrísticament, “Voulez-Vous” és com un joc de seducció entre dos amants que ja han ballat aquesta dansa abans. Agnetha Fältskog i Anni-Frid Lyngstad s’alternen les veus amb passió sobre un ritme incessant, i les seves harmonies transmeten tant la temptació com la diversió. És un himne del desig: immediat, conscient i irresistible. El missatge és senzill però etern — aprofita la nit, arrisca’t i viu sense penediment.

Al Regne Unit i Irlanda, “Voulez-Vous” es va publicar com a doble cara A juntament amb “Angeleyes”, arribant al número 3 de les llistes i convertint-se en un clàssic de l’era disco. Als Estats Units, tot i arribar només al número 80 del Billboard Hot 100, va esdevenir una de les preferides dels clubs gràcies a la seva versió llarga de 6 minuts i 7 segons, l’únic remix disco oficial d’ABBA. Inicialment editada com a maxi-single promocional, aquesta versió es va recuperar més tard al recopilatori “The Definitive Collection” (2001).

Musicalment, “Voulez-Vous” comparteix esperit amb altres temes disco del grup, com “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)”, però destaca per la seva urgència i precisió. Amb una línia de baix vibrant, harmonies multicapa i una producció gairebé cinematogràfica, la cançó captura el moment exacte en què ABBA va adaptar-se al món nocturn i lluminós de la fi dels setanta.

Quan ABBA van publicar “Voulez-Vous” la primavera del 1979, ja eren una de les bandes més famoses del món. Havien triomfat amb èxits com “Dancing Queen”, “Take a Chance on Me” o “Knowing Me, Knowing You” entre d’altres, però aquest nou àlbum va marcar un gir cap al so disco i la pista de ball. Mentre altres grups europeus intentaven adaptar-se a la moda nord-americana del moment, ABBA ho van fer amb una elegància i una producció que mantenien intacta la seva identitat pop. El disc va ser enregistrat principalment als Polar Studios de Stockholm, excepte “Voulez-Vous” com s’ha dit. 

Tot i que els membres del grup —Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad (Frida), Benny Andersson i Björn Ulvaeus— vivien un moment d’èxit global, la seva vida personal començava a mostrar esquerdes. Les dues parelles (Agnetha i Björn, Frida i Benny) s’estaven distanciant sentimentalment, i aquest malestar emocional va donar una tonalitat més madura i introspectiva a algunes cançons del disc. Temes com “I Have a Dream” i “Chiquitita” reflecteixen esperança i consol, mentre que “Voulez-Vous” i “Does Your Mother Know” celebren l’escapisme i la diversió sense culpa.

Musicalment, “Voulez-Vous” combina elements de disco, pop i soul europeu, amb arranjaments exuberants i harmonies vocals d’una precisió quasi matemàtica.
