L’any 1986, Level 42 ja s’havien consolidat com una de les bandes de jazz-funk més imaginatives del Regne Unit, coneguts per la seva sofisticació musical i per la mestria percusiva al baix de Mark King. Però amb “Lessons in Love”, el grup va crear un himne elegant i pensat per a la ràdio que no només es convertiria en el seu èxit comercial més gran, sinó que també els obriria les portes al reconeixement internacional.

Publicada com a single independent l’abril del 1986 (un any abans d’aparèixer a l’àlbum “Running in the Family”), “Lessons in Love” va trobar l’equilibri perfecte entre la tècnica del funk i la sofisticació del pop més polit. El single va arribar al número 3 de la llista britànica i va encapçalar les llistes d’Espanya, Alemanya, Suïssa, Sud-àfrica i Finlàndia, a més de situar-se al número 12 del Billboard Hot 100 dels Estats Units —una fita poc habitual per al grup.

Els orígens de la cançó van ser sorprenentment modestos. Segons Mark King, la melodia va sorgir com una improvisació final durant una actuació en directe del tema “Physical Presence” al programa The Tube de Channel 4, l’octubre de 1985. Després de Nadal, King va enregistrar una maqueta casolana amb una gravadora digital Sony, on ja hi havia un vers, un pont i un esborrany de la tornada. Tot i això, considerava que el cor no tenia prou força. Llavors va intervenir Wally Badarou, col·laborador i productor habitual del grup, que va reestructurar els acords de la tornada i va suggerir una nova línia vocal més melòdica. Aquella revisió va transformar el tema d’una jam amb influències funk en un single pop de caire popular.

Durant la gravació a Maison Rouge Studios de Londres, a principis de 1986, King va portar l’arranjament a un nivell sorprenent. La cançó conté set línies de baix entrellaçades: tres sintetitzadors analògics, dos sintetitzadors FM i dos baixos elèctrics (un tocant amb el polze i un altre amb els dits). Aquesta superposició de capes va donar a la peça una gran potència rítmica i una textura harmònica rica, convertint-la en una demostració brillant de la tècnica de King sense perdre l’accessibilitat pop.

“Lessons in Love” reflexiona sobre el penediment i les veritats doloroses que sorgeixen d’una relació fallida. La seva combinació de melancolia i energia optimista va connectar amb el públic d’una època en què el pop emotiu i sofisticat dominava les ones radiofòniques.

L’èxit de “Lessons in Love” va ser decisiu. Va obrir el camí per al triomf comercial de “Running in the Family” el 1987, que inclouria nous èxits com “Something About You” (als Estats Units) i “Running in the Family” i “To Be With You Again” a Europa. Tot i que el grup ja tenia una base de seguidors fidel, aquest single els va catapultar a l’estatus d’estrelles d’estadi i continua sent una de les seves cançons més recordades i interpretades.

By 1986, Level 42 had already established themselves as one of the UK’s most inventive jazz-funk outfits, known for their sophisticated musicianship and the percussive bass mastery of Mark King. But with “Lessons in Love”, the group crafted a sleek, radio-ready anthem that not only became their biggest commercial hit but also opened the door to global mainstream recognition.

Released as a standalone single in April 1986 (a full year before appearing on the album “Running in the Family”), “Lessons in Love” struck a perfect balance between funk musicianship and polished pop songwriting. The single climbed to No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart and topped the charts in Spain, Germany, Switzerland, South Africa, and Finland, while also breaking into the US Billboard Hot 100 at No. 12—a rare feat for the band. 

The song’s origins were surprisingly humble. According to Mark King, the melody first surfaced as an extended outro jam during a live TV performance of “Physical Presence” on Channel 4’s The Tube in October 1985. After Christmas that year, King worked up a rough demo on a Sony digital recorder, laying down a verse, chorus, and bridge. However, he felt the chorus lacked punch. Enter Wally Badarou, the band’s longtime collaborator and producer, who restructured the chorus chords and suggested a new, more soaring vocal line. The reimagining elevated the track from a funk-inflected jam to an anthemic pop single.

When recording commenced at Maison Rouge Studios in London in early 1986, King pushed the arrangement into bold new territory. The track features an extraordinary seven interlocking basslines: three analog synths, two FM synths, and two electric basses (a thumb-slapping line and a finger-style line). This dense layering gave the song both rhythmic drive and a lush harmonic texture, making it a showcase of King’s technical brilliance without sacrificing accessibility.

“Lessons in Love” reflects on regret and the painful truths that come from failed relationships. Its blend of melancholy reflection with an uplifting, almost euphoric arrangement struck a chord with audiences at a time when glossy, emotionally direct pop was dominating the airwaves.

The success of “Lessons in Love” proved pivotal. It paved the way for the commercial triumph of “Running in the Family” in 1987, which yielded further hits such as “Something About You” (in the US) and “Running in the Family” and “To Be With You Again” in Europe. While the band had enjoyed a loyal following prior, this single catapulted them to arena-filling status and remains one of their most frequently revisited songs.
