Quan “All Around the World” de Lisa Stansfield va sortir a la tardor de 1989, va ser com si l’univers pop hagués descobert sobtadament una nova estrella polar. When Lisa Stansfield’s “All Around the World” dropped in the autumn of 1989, it was as if the pop universe suddenly discovered a new northern star. A Rochdale-born singer with a deep, velvety voice that carried the gravitas of classic soul. Written with longtime collaborators Ian Devaney and Andy Morris, the track was built on a simple piano melody and the kind of lush strings that recalled Philadelphia soul. Stansfield’s plaintive lyrics—about searching the globe for a lost love—became instantly relatable, but what truly hooked listeners was the “Been around the world and I, I, I…” refrain.

That “I, I, I” was never supposed to happen—it was a nonsense placeholder Stansfield improvised in the studio. But like the best pop accidents, it stuck, transforming into the song’s unforgettable hook. Paired with a spoken-word intro inspired by Barry White, the track was steeped in soul traditions yet carried the polish of late-’80s pop production.

The recording itself was stripped-back and organic. Stansfield laid down her vocals in just two takes, and the raw demo energy carried into the finished product. The result? A song that topped charts in a dozen countries and made Stansfield the first white British woman to hit #1 on the US R&B chart. The song also gave her her first number one hit on the UK Singles Chart.

Directed by Philip Richardson, the music video doubled down on the song’s themes of searching and longing. Opening in stark black-and-white, Stansfield delivers the sultry spoken intro before bursting into colour against the backdrop of a world map. With her trademark kiss curl, short hair, and crimson lipstick, Stansfield’s look became instantly iconic. Scenes cut between her sitting in the rain, performing on outdoor steps, and standing in the middle of a rotating circle of men—visual metaphors for her endless search. By the finale, as she sings in the downpour, the rain becomes both cinematic flourish and emotional release. The video earned her a nomination for Best New Artist in a Video at the 1990 MTV VMAs.

“All Around the World” wasn’t just Lisa Stansfield’s breakthrough—it was her passport to global fame. The single drove sales of her debut album “Affection”, which went platinum across multiple territories and defined her as Britain’s premier white soul diva of the era.
