A mitjans dels anys setanta, The Isley Brothers ja s’havien guanyat un lloc a la història de la música nord-americana: havien sobreviscut a l’era primerenca del rock ’n’ roll, havien remodelat el soul i el funk, i el 1975 estaven al punt més alt de la seva carrera amb el groove militant de “Fight the Power”. By the mid-1970s, The Isley Brothers had already written themselves into American music history: they had survived the early rock ’n’ roll era, reshaped soul and funk, and by 1975 were riding high with the militant groove of “Fight the Power.” But when they walked into the studio to record its follow-up, they also tapped into another side of their artistry—the yearning, socially conscious plea that became “Harvest for the World.”

Released in 1976 as the title track to their “Harvest for the World” LP, the song carries a message both spiritual and humanist. Written collectively by the six-member “3 + 3” lineup, the lyrics ask, almost rhetorically: “When will there be a harvest for the world?”

Ernie Isley, who penned most of the words, later described it as a vision of “a peaceful gathering where every human being is invited, and where no one will be hindered in any way from participating.” His brother-in-arms Chris Jasper added that it was born out of the times: the Vietnam War had just ended, the economy was shaky, and inequality was still an open wound in American life. The Isley Brothers weren’t just delivering love songs and funk workouts—they were grappling with the bigger picture.

Ronald Isley takes lead vocal with his signature mix of silk and urgency, supported by the tight harmonies of O’Kelly and Rudolph. Jasper’s keyboards provide a solemn, almost hymn-like undercurrent, while Ernie’s guitar work gives it a contemporary sheen. Unlike the thunderous defiance of “Fight the Power,” “Harvest for the World” is gentle but insistent—a sermon set to soul, designed to make you sway and think at the same time.

Originally, the Isleys planned “Harvest for the World” as the lead single from “The Heat Is On” (1975), but the funk anthem “Fight the Power” won out. The track was held back and instead became the centerpiece of its own album in 1976. Though it didn’t chart as high as some of their funkier singles, it quickly became one of their most respected songs, cherished for its message and sincerity.

In 1988, Liverpool soul group The Christians revived it for a charity single, their version climbing to #8 in the UK, two places higher than the Isleys’ original. Accompanied by an award-winning animated video co-created by Aardman Animations (later famous for Wallace and Gromit), it introduced the song’s message to a new generation.
