“When I Think of You” is a breezy, uptempo love song about finding joy and relief in the thought of a lover written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. After breaking out of the shadows of her famous family and the first mistakes of her career, Janet entered into a bold new partnership with Minneapolis hitmakers Jam and Lewis. Jam and Lewis originally crafted much of “Control”’s material for singer Sharon Bryant, formerly of Atlantic Starr, but when she declined, the songs found their true match in Janet. The producers worked not only on the music but on Janet’s comfort and confidence in the studio—Terry Lewis even cooked home meals for her to ease her homesickness from hotel food. “With artists, you sometimes have to be a psychologist, a counselor, a masseuse—anything,” Jam later recalled. The effort paid off: Janet’s voice carried a mixture of warmth and spark that made the song soar.

The music video was a vivid slice of mid-’80s pop culture. Directed by Julien Temple and choreographed by a then up-and-coming Paula Abdul (with legendary Broadway choreographer Michael Kidd lending his touch), it plays like a playful, one-take romp through a bustling neighborhood. Janet wanders through a street teeming with flamethrowers, sailors, jugglers, dancers in zoot suits, and more, her radiant energy tying the surreal vignettes together. Though presented as one continuous shot, the video cleverly masked three takes with seamless edits—hidden by a photographer’s flash. Budget-conscious but inventive, it demonstrated how imagination could trump resources. Extras doubled up in roles, swapping costumes behind the camera for multiple cameos, creating a carnival-like atmosphere. The result was one of Janet’s most iconic early visuals: colorful, theatrical, and brimming with youthful joy.

“When I Think of You” was more than just a hit single—it marked the beginning of Janet Jackson’s reign as a pop powerhouse. For Jam and Lewis, it was also their first-ever #1 production, the first of an astonishing 16 they would helm.
