Llançada el 1984, la cançó benèfica "Do They Know It's Christmas?" de Band Aid tenia com a objectiu recaptar fons per a combatre la fam a Etiòpia. Sting i Simon Le Bon havien enregistrat les seves parts prèviament, però la resta es van unir el mateix dia.

La portada del senzill, dissenyada per Peter Blake, famós per la seva obra amb "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", va mostrar una brillantor artística. The tight schedule, without prior hearing, led to a focused effort, resulting in exceptional vocal tracks. Recorded and mixed in a 24-hour stint on November 25, 1984, at Sarm West Studios in London, the song features verses sung by Paul Young, Boy George, George Michael, Simon Le Bon, and Bono. Sting and Simon LeBon had pre-recorded their parts, but the rest joined on the same day.

The single's cover, designed by Peter Blake of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band fame, showcased artistic brilliance.
