Sembla que tothom a Motown havia sentit parlar d'aquesta cançó  abans que finalment fos enregistrada. El clàssic sobre un home que descobreix que la seva dona li posa les banyes va ser escrit per Norman Whitfield i Barrett Strong. Strong va tenir la idea i va demanar als escriptors de Motown Holland-Dozier-Holland que hi treballéssin amb ell. Es van negar a donar crèdit a un altre escriptor, així que Strong ho va portar a Whitfield, que el va ajudar a muntar-ho. La cançó va acabar convertint-se en un clàssic de Motown, però va tenir un començament difícil, ja que els executius de la companyia pensaven que era massa blues i li mancava potencial per a ser un èxit.

Smokey Robinson and the Miracles van ser els primers a enregistrar la cançó, però la seva versió no es va llançar fins anys més tard. Després ho van intentar els Isley Brothers, però la seva interpretació no es va llançar mai. Whitfield i Strong van fer que Marvin Gaye enregistrés la cançó, però el cap de Motown, Berry Gordy, va triar "Your Unchanging Love" de Holland-Dozier-Holland com a proper senzill en lloc de "Grapevine". Finalment, un nou grup de Motown, Gladys Knight and the Pips, va enregistrar la cançó com a una peça de gòspel. La seva versió va ser un èxit, entrant al Top 40 el novembre de 1967 i arribant al núm. 2 als Estats Units.

La versió de Marvin Gaye es va incloure al seu àlbum de 1968 "In the Groove" (posteriorment titulat "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"). Després que E. Rodney Jones, un locutor de ràdio de Chicago, comencés a radiar-la, Berry Gordy va reconsiderar i va llançar la versió de Gaye com a senzill, que es va fer encara més popular i finalment va acabar sent la versió definitiva de la cançó. La "Grapevine" de Gaye va entrar a les llistes aproximadament un any després que la de Knight, arribant al núm. 1 als Estats Units el 14 de desembre de 1968.

Amb aquesta melodia desgarradora sobre un home que es sent de segona mà perquè la seva noia l’enganya, Marvin Gaye va treure tota l'emoció de la cançó gràcies a Norman Whitfield, que la va produir i li va donar instruccions molt específiques. Whitfield va fer que Gaye cantés lleugerament més alt del seu abast normal, la qual cosa va crear la tensió vocal, i li ho va fer fer repetidament fins que ho fes bé. Gaye ho va explicar a NME: "Simplement vaig seguir el que em deia, ja que sentia que la direcció que ell estava exposant era la correcta. Si ho hagués fet jo mateix, no l'hauria cantada de cap manera així, però veieu, hi ha molts avantatges en simplement cantar material d'altres persones i seguir direccions. La feina d'interpretar és força important, perquè quan les persones no poden expressar el que hi ha en les seves ànimes, si hi ha un artista que pot... llavors crec que això és molt valuós."

Fins que la duet de Lionel Richie/Diana Ross "Endless Love" la va superar amb una durada de nou setmanes el 1981, aquesta va ser la cançó de Motown que va estar més temps al núm. 1 de la llista Hot 100, liderant-la durant set setmanes. Va ser una sensació també al Regne Unit, on va estar al núm. 1 durant tres setmanes.

It seems like everyone in Motown heard about this song "through the grapevine" before it was finally recorded. The classic about a man who finds out his woman is cheating on him was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong. Strong came up with the idea and asked Motown writers Holland-Dozier-Holland to work on it with him. They refused to credit another writer, so Strong took it to Whitfield, who helped put it together. The song eventually became a Motown classic, but it had a rough start, as executives at the company thought it was too bluesy and lacked hit potential.

Smokey Robinson and the Miracles were the first to record the song, but their version wasn't released until years later. The Isley Brothers then took a crack at it, but their version wasn't released. Whitfield and Strong then had Marvin Gaye record the song but still no luck: Motown head Berry Gordy chose Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Your Unchanging Love" over "Grapevine" as his next single. Finally, a new Motown act Gladys Knight and the Pips recorded the song as a gospel rocker. Their version was a hit, entering the Top 40 in November 1967 and going to #2 in America.

Marvin Gaye's version was included on his 1968 album “In the Groove” (later re-titled “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”). After E. Rodney Jones, a Chicago disc jockey started playing it on the air, Berry Gordy reconsidered and released Gaye's version as a single, which became even more popular and known as the definitive version of the song. Gaye's "Grapevine" pounded the charts about a year after Knight's, going to #1 in America on December 14, 1968.

With this heartbreaking tune about a man who finds out secondhand that his girl is cheating on him, Marvin Gaye wrung out the emotion in the song thanks to Norman Whitfield, who produced the track and gave him very specific instructions. Whitfield had Gaye sing slightly higher than his normal range, which created the strained vocal, and he made him do it over and over until he got it right. Gaye explained to NME: "I simply took direction, as I felt the direction he was expounding was a proper one. Had I done it myself I would not have sung it at all like that, but y'see there are many benefits in just singing other people's material and taking directions. The job of interpreting is quite an important one, because when people are not able to express what is in their souls if there is an artist who can... then I think that is very valuable."

Until the Lionel Richie/Diana Ross duet "Endless love” bested it with a 9-week run in 1981, this was the longest-running Motown #1 Hot 100 hit, topping the chart for seven weeks. It was a sensation in the UK as well, where it was #1 for three weeks.
