En una entrevista amb Rolling Stone, McCartney va compartir el procés darrere de "Coming Up". Inicialment, el va enregistrar a la seva granja a Escòcia, començant amb una pista de bateria. Sense tenir una idea clara de com evolucionaria la cançó, va afegir progressivament guitarres i baix per construir la base de fons. Pel que fa a les veus, va experimentar amb un nou aparell que en variava la velocitat, manipulant la seva veu per aconseguir el so vocal únic de la cançó.

Una versió en directe de "Coming Up" es va enregistrar a Glasgow, Escòcia, el 17 de desembre de 1979, per Wings durant la seva gira pel Regne Unit. Tot i que Columbia Records volia incloure la versió en directe a “McCartney II”, Paul es va resistir al canvi, mantenint la seva preferència de mantenir-lo com un àlbum d'estudi en solitari. En canvi, una còpia promocional d'una cara en un single amb la versió de Wings es va incloure amb l'àlbum a Amèrica del Nord.

John Lennon va elogiar "Coming Up" com a "bon treball". La reacció positiva de Lennon sobre la cançó, segons sembla, el va inspirar a tornar a gravar el 1980. En sentir-la per primera vegada a la ràdio, Lennon va exclamar humorísticament: "Fuck a pig! It's Paul!". Lennon va expressar preferència per la versió d'estudi sobre la versió en directe llançada com a single, afirmant que li agradava la "versió estrafolària" que McCartney va fer al seu graner. "Coming Up" from Paul McCartney's album McCartney II showcases his solo musical prowess as he single-handedly played all the instruments. The song's synthesized sound, with sped-up vocals, reflects McCartney's experimentation with vari-speed tape machines. Despite its straightforward lyrics, the song's memorable chorus and masterful craftsmanship contributed to its success. Achieving the second position in the UK and securing the top spot in the US, "Coming Up" demonstrated McCartney's ability to create engaging and commercially successful solo work.

In a Rolling Stone interview, McCartney shared the process behind "Coming Up." He initially recorded it on his farm in Scotland, starting with a drum track. Without a clear idea of how the song would evolve, he gradually added guitars and bass to build up the backing track. When considering the vocals, he experimented with a vari-speed machine, manipulating the speed of his voice to achieve the unique vocal sound in the song.

A live version of "Coming Up" was recorded in Glasgow, Scotland, on December 17, 1979, by Wings during their UK tour. While Columbia Records wanted to include the live version on McCartney II, McCartney resisted the change, maintaining his preference for keeping it a solo studio album. Instead, a one-sided 7" white-label promotional copy of the Wings version was included with the album in North America.

John Lennon, McCartney's former Beatles bandmate, praised "Coming Up" as "a good piece of work." Lennon's positive reaction to the song reportedly inspired him to return to recording in 1980. Upon hearing it on the radio for the first time, Lennon humorously exclaimed, "Fuck a pig! It's Paul!" Lennon expressed a preference for the studio version over the live version released as a single, stating that he liked the "freak version" McCartney made in his barn. He felt the record company had nerve altering it and appreciated the unconventional nature of the song.

In the "Coming Up" music video, Paul and Linda McCartney played all the band members, a concept that preceded similar videos by other artists. The video, directed by Keith McMillan, employed early electronic trickery, making compositing a technical challenge in 1980. It took two days to shoot and additional time to edit. The characters McCartney portrayed in the video were inspired by real people, including Frank Zappa, Hank Marvin, Ron Mael, and Andy Mackay. The drum kit humorously identified the band as "The Plastic Macs," a nod to John Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band."
