Belinda Carlisle released “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” in September 1987, and just a few could have predicted just how defining it would become. The song, written by Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley, was the lead single from Carlisle’s second solo album, “Heaven on Earth”, and quickly catapulted her into global superstardom. It reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on December 5, 1987—her first and only American chart-topper—and topped the UK Singles Chart a month later. It also hit No. 2 in Australia. The track earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1988, though she ultimately lost to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).”

“Heaven Is a Place on Earth” is a radiant pop anthem about finding paradise through love—a celebration of earthly joy and emotional transcendence. The inspiration came unexpectedly: lyricist Ellen Shipley spotted a greeting card at a Brooklyn gas station that read “Heaven on Earth.” When she and Nowels began collaborating on material for Carlisle, Shipley wrote the phrase on a chalkboard. Nowels added “is a place” between the words, and pop history was made.

The recording itself was a team effort. The song’s soaring chorus features backing vocals by Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas, hitmaker Diane Warren, and the writers themselves, Shipley and Nowels. Warren also contributed two other tracks to the album, “World Without You” and “I Get Weak.”

For Carlisle, the song marked a new chapter. After the breakup of her pioneering all-female band The Go-Go’s in 1985, she had already enjoyed solo success with “Mad About You.” But “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” elevated her to a different level—turning her from post-punk pop icon into a glamorous international star. Working closely with her former bandmate Charlotte Caffey, Carlisle helped shape an album that balanced emotional sincerity with irresistible pop sheen.

For Ellen Shipley, this was the first song she had ever written for another artist. After three solo albums of her own, she had nearly left the music industry behind—until Rick Nowels persuaded her to collaborate again. “When Rick asked, ‘What would you do if this was your next song?’ I could suddenly hear it. It came easily—it just flowed.”

The song’s music video, directed by Academy Award-winning actress Diane Keaton, marked a striking reinvention of Carlisle’s image. Gone was the thrift-store punk aesthetic of her Go-Go’s days; in its place stood a confident, cinematic star bathed in celestial blue light. Keaton’s direction emphasized light, motion, and glamour, framing Carlisle as a luminous figure caught between dream and reality. The video also featured Morgan Mason, son of actor James Mason and Carlisle’s husband, who had also appeared in her earlier hit video “Mad About You.”
