Els Gap Band —el trio dels germans Wilson, Charlie, Ronnie i Robert, de Tulsa (Oklahoma)— s’havien convertit en una de les forces dominants de l’R&B i el funk a inicis dels anys vuitanta. La seva habilitat per fusionar el groove cru del funk amb una producció polida i apta per a la ràdio els va assegurar un lloc fix tant a les llistes com a les pistes de ball. Escrita pel percussionista de la banda, Raymond Calhoun, “Outstanding” va aparèixer per primera vegada al seu àlbum de gran èxit “Gap Band IV”.

El disc també incloïa el súper èxit “You Dropped a Bomb on Me”, però va ser “Outstanding” la que va capturar el costat més sensual i romàntic del grup. Llançada com a single, va arribar al núm. 1 del Billboard Hot Black Singles el febrer de 1983, on s’hi va mantenir tres setmanes. Tot i que només va escalar fins al núm. 51 al Billboard Hot 100, es va convertir en una de les cançons insígnia dels Gap Band i en un clàssic lent però resistent que ha viscut molt més enllà del seu recorregut inicial a les llistes.

La inspiració de “Outstanding” va ser sorprenentment tendra. Calhoun recordava que, mentre tocava acords al piano a casa, va mirar la seva filla petita, d’un any, i la joia de la paternitat li va suggerir el ganxo: “She’s outstanding” (“És extraordinària”). Allò que havia començat com una cançó dedicada a un nadó va acabar convertint-se en un himne romàntic de devoció, interpretat amb una calidesa sedosa per Charlie Wilson, la veu del qual influiria tota una generació de cantants d’R&B.

A l’estudi, el productor Lonnie Simmons solia exigir precisió i perfeccionisme. Però en aquest cas, la màgia va sorgir ràpidament: Calhoun va explicar que la banda va enregistrar “Outstanding” en una sola presa, i Simmons va decidir mantenir-ne les petites imperfeccions perquè la interpretació tenia el feeling adequat. El resultat va ser un tema que respira naturalitat i intimitat, amb la veu suau de Charlie Wilson flotant sobre les subtils percussions de Calhoun.

La versió de senzill durava 3:18, retallada per a la ràdio, però molts fans i DJs preferien la versió estesa de 6:15, que deixava respirar el groove amb trencaments de percussió i passatges instrumentals —ideal per als clubs on els Gap Band regnaven.

“Outstanding” es va convertir en el tercer dels quatre núm. 1 de la banda a les llistes R&B, després de “Burn Rubber on Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)” i “Early in the Morning”, i abans de “All of My Love” (1989).

The Gap Band—the trio of Wilson brothers Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert from Tulsa, Oklahoma—had become one of the dominant forces in R&B and funk by the early 80s. Their ability to merge the raw groove of funk with sleek, radio-friendly production made them fixtures on the charts and dance floors alike. Written by Raymond Calhoun, the band’s percussionist, “Outstanding” first appeared on their blockbuster 1982 album “Gap Band IV”. 

The record also included the smash “You Dropped a Bomb on Me”, but it was “Outstanding” that captured the group’s more sensual and romantic side. Released as a single, it soared to No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot Black Singles chart in February 1983, where it stayed for three weeks. Though it only reached No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100, it became one of the Gap Band’s signature songs and a slow-burn classic that lived on well beyond its chart run.

The inspiration behind “Outstanding” was surprisingly tender. Calhoun recalled that while playing chords on the piano at home, he looked over at his infant daughter, just one year old at the time. The joy of fatherhood gave him the hook: “She’s outstanding.” What began as a song about a baby became a romantic anthem of devotion, delivered with silky warmth by lead singer Charlie Wilson, whose voice would later influence an entire generation of R&B singers.

In the studio, producer Lonnie Simmons usually demanded precision and perfection. But in this case, the magic happened quickly. Calhoun said the band recorded “Outstanding” in a single take, with Simmons opting to keep any minor flaws because the performance had the right feel. The result was a track that radiates looseness and intimacy, with Charlie Wilson’s smooth delivery riding over Calhoun’s subtle percussion touches.

The single version ran 3:18, trimmed for radio, but many fans and DJs preferred the 6:15 extended version, which let the groove breathe with percussion breaks and instrumental passages—ideal for the clubs where the Gap Band reigned supreme.

“Outstanding” became the third of four R&B chart-toppers for the band, following “Burn Rubber on Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)” and “Early in the Morning”, and preceding “All of My Love” in 1989.
