Color Me Badd van publicar “I Wanna Sex You Up” el març de 1991. Produïda per Dr. Freeze (conegut més tard per escriure “Poison” per a Bell Biv DeVoe), la cançó fusionava harmonies R&B amb un toc de hip-hop i una lletra provocadora que, en aquell moment, semblava alhora agosarada i irresistible.

El tema va aparèixer per primer cop a la banda sonora del drama urbà “New Jack City”, protagonitzat per Wesley Snipes, Ice-T, Chris Rock i Judd Nelson. La seva inclusió al film va vincular el grup amb el so i la cultura dels primers noranta, donant a la seva estrena una plataforma massiva. Poc després, es va publicar com a senzill principal del seu àlbum debut C.M.B.

Comercialment, “I Wanna Sex You Up” va ser un èxit fulgurant. Als Estats Units, va passar quatre setmanes al núm. 2 del Billboard Hot 100, va liderar les llistes Hot R&B Singles i 12-inch Singles Sales, i ràpidament va obtenir el disc de platí. Musicalment, el tema destaca pel seu ús intensiu del sample de l’enregistrament en directe de Betty Wright del 1974 “Tonight Is the Night”. El fragment parlat de Wright (“I KNOW you’re not gonna sing THAT song!”) es repeteix com a ganxo recurrent, donant a la cançó tant el seu toc entremaliat com una continuïtat generacional. Color Me Badd, formats per Abrams, Kevin Thornton, Mark Calderon i Sam Watters a Oklahoma City, s’havien fet un nom inicialment fent audicions improvisades per a estrelles com Huey Lewis, Kool & the Gang i Jon Bon Jovi. Amb “I Wanna Sex You Up”, van passar de l’anonimat a l’estrellat mundial.

Tot i que singles posteriors com “I Adore Mi Amor” i “All 4 Love” van arribar realment al núm. 1 als Estats Units, “I Wanna Sex You Up” continua sent el seu tema més emblemàtic—un himne del new jack swing que condensava l’energia divertida i la confiança sexual del R&B dels primers noranta.

Color Me Badd released “I Wanna Sex You Up” in March 1991. Produced by Dr. Freeze (best known for later penning “Poison” for Bell Biv DeVoe), the track fused R&B harmonies with a slick hip-hop edge and provocative lyrics that, at the time, felt both daring and infectious.

The song first appeared on the soundtrack to the urban crime drama “New Jack City”, starring Wesley Snipes, Ice-T, Chris Rock, and Judd Nelson. Its placement in the film tied the group to the sound and culture of the early ’90s, giving their debut a massive platform. Shortly after, it was issued as the lead single from their debut album “C.M.B.”

The bassline and groove borrowed from Wright’s performance gave the track its sultry yet playful edge, perfectly suited for crossover success.

Lyrically, “I Wanna Sex You Up” was controversial. Its bold directness made it too risqué for some radio programmers, who rebranded it as “I Wanna Love You Up” in certain markets. But that only added to the buzz. Lead singer Bryan Abrams carried most of the vocal load, although he initially disliked how his voice sounded on playback—an ironic twist given how quickly the single made him and the group famous.

Color Me Badd, formed by Abrams, Kevin Thornton, Mark Calderon, and Sam Watters in Oklahoma City, had built their reputation by performing impromptu auditions for stars like Huey Lewis, Kool & the Gang, and Jon Bon Jovi.
