In an era defined by both Cold War anxiety and pop-commercial flash, “Caravan of Love” offered something rare: a hopeful, inclusive vision. By the mid-1980s, the mighty Isley Brothers had begun to fracture. From their groundbreaking 3 + 3 lineup of the 1970s, which had melded rock, funk, and soul into a unique blend, three of its younger members—Ernie and Marvin Isley with their brother-in-law Chris Jasper—branched out on their own. Calling themselves Isley-Jasper-Isley, they sought to carve a new identity apart from the family dynasty. Out of this creative departure came “Caravan of Love”, a shimmering gospel-inspired anthem that became their most popular moment.

Chris Jasper, the trio’s keyboardist and principal songwriter, had grown increasingly motivated to fold his Christian beliefs into pop music. Released in 1985, the single climbed to #1 on Billboard’s R&B chart, holding that spot for three weeks, though it peaked only at #51 on the Hot 100. Still, it became the trio’s signature hit, standing as their one true brush with mainstream recognition before their split in 1988.

The video, filmed on the streets of New York City, matched the song’s ethos of inclusion. With imagery of everyday people, neighborhoods, and community life, it embodied the track’s vision of a “caravan” that welcomes everyone to join, irrespective of background or belief.

The song took on a surprising second life just a year later, when British indie-pop band The Housemartins recorded a stark a cappella version. Stripping away the lush R&B instrumentation, their 1986 rendition put the focus entirely on layered voices—simple, heartfelt, and communal. Released as a Christmas single, their version soared to #1 on the UK Singles Chart, giving the group their biggest hit. It was both a curious crossover—socialist-leaning indie kids reinterpreting American gospel-soul—and a moment of pop history, one of the few purely vocal chart-toppers of the 1980s.

“Caravan of Love” remains one of the great gospel-pop songs of the 1980s. For Isley-Jasper-Isley, it stands as a highlight, proving that even outside the Isley Brothers' orbit they could create a song that reached the masses with a cultural message of unity. For The Housemartins, it became their unlikely claim to fame, a prelude to Paul Heaton’s later success with The Beautiful South.
